Audio tools with honest limits.

Frequency Test is a free browser-based lab for exploring hearing range, checking headphones and speakers, and generating precise audio tones.

Why this site exists

Many online tools blur three different questions: “What can I hear?”, “What can my equipment reproduce?” and “Can I generate a specific signal?” Frequency Test gives each question its own workflow while sharing a transparent, safety-conscious audio engine.

What we value

  • Clarity: hearing tests and equipment tests are kept conceptually separate.
  • Privacy: local audio generation, no microphone and no account requirement.
  • Transparency: visible methodology, device limits and non-medical language.
  • Useful restraint: no fake dB precision, exact “ear age” or automatic hardware diagnosis.

Technical approach

The site is statically generated with Astro and TypeScript. Audio is synthesized with the browser’s Web Audio API. No database, CMS or server-side test API is required.

Before you begin

  1. Lower your device volume before playing a tone.
  2. Start with a quiet, comfortable level.
  3. Never raise the volume to force yourself to hear a frequency.
  4. Stop immediately if the sound feels uncomfortable.
Browser audio is not calibrated. We cannot know the sound pressure level produced by your device.
