Sine is the right default for testing

A sine wave contains one target frequency. Square, triangle and sawtooth waves contain harmonics above the selected frequency, which makes them useful for synthesis experiments but unsuitable for deciding whether you hear the target frequency itself.

Why the maximum can vary

The audio engine caps output at the lower of 20 kHz or just below half the browser’s sample rate. This follows the Nyquist limit and leaves a small safety margin. Your physical playback device may have a lower practical limit.

Before you begin

  1. Lower your device volume before playing a tone.
  2. Start with a quiet, comfortable level.
  3. Never raise the volume to force yourself to hear a frequency.
  4. Stop immediately if the sound feels uncomfortable.
Browser audio is not calibrated. We cannot know the sound pressure level produced by your device.
