Sine is the right default for testing
A sine wave contains one target frequency. Square, triangle and sawtooth waves contain harmonics above the selected frequency, which makes them useful for synthesis experiments but unsuitable for deciding whether you hear the target frequency itself.
| Waveform | Best used for | Testing caution |
|---|---|---|
| Sine | Frequency checks, resonance searches | Purest target frequency |
| Square | Digital synthesis, signal tracing | Strong odd harmonics |
| Triangle | Softer synthesis tones | Contains quieter odd harmonics |
| Sawtooth | Bright synthesis, filtering | Contains many harmonics |
Why the maximum can vary
The audio engine caps output at the lower of 20 kHz or just below half the browser’s sample rate. This follows the Nyquist limit and leaves a small safety margin. Your physical playback device may have a lower practical limit.
