Logarithmic sweeps match how frequency is organized
Octaves are ratios: 20 to 40 Hz is one octave, just as 10 kHz to 20 kHz is one octave. A logarithmic sweep spends comparable time across these ratios. A linear sweep moves by the same number of hertz per second and rushes through the bass region.
What a sweep can reveal
You may notice resonances, rattles, abrupt level changes or gaps. None automatically identifies the cause. Repeat the marked area using the tone generator, then change one variable—headphones, source device, listening position or room—to narrow it down.
